Hu M’ani So Ma Me
“Hu m’ani so ma me nti na atwe mmienu nam.” This has been one of my favorite Akan proverbs since I was a kid. A direct translation into English reads: ‘“Blow the dust from my eyes” is why two antelopes walk together.’
I tried to capture the essence of this proverb in the drawing, based on my interpretation of it. The two antelopes are painted black to represent the unknown: you may never see that situation where you need someone’s help coming & you may never know whose help it is that you need (till you find yourself in that situation). i.e. till you find yourself in a situation where you ‘need dust blown from your eyes’ you won’t know whose you’ll need.
But once you’ve built good, strong friendships, whenever you do need that help, regardless of what it is, you will have friends who could be your second antelope. Even more importantly, you, theirs. After all, friends need each other & that’s the crux of this proverb.
So, be there for your friends! Always :)

Additional fact: the eerie & fire-like background represents the possible troubles you could find yourself in; the dust in your eyes. Those situations where you would need a friend’s help.
Ok I just made that up.
